Role Lead Designer

This project focused on researching and designing a magazine from scratch.

Starting with basic research, moving onto basic designs into more well laid out content. I crafted a sports magazine about rugby.

The Challenge

The challenge came in all sections of this project. The research was consuming as I had to teach myself about the world of magazines and choose an art style to base my design off of. The design of the magazine was difficult at first as I could not find a balance between colour theme, text amount and spacing.

Key Challenges

Colour themes, text amount, spacing between images, text and dead space, image usage.

Through extensive research, I identified the core values that would control every design decision moving forward.

Research & Discovery

I began with comprehensive market research and research into competitors to highlight the key points that consumers of this area of business are drawn to.

Concept Development

  • Created multiple designs with different palettes to test.
  • Developed color palette options based on brand values.
  • Explored typography that balances modernity with readability.
  • Tested concepts with target audience for feedback.

Refinement & Execution

After selecting the strongest direction, I refined my plan into an initial designs with a certain design aspect chosen. Testing this on target audiences I was quickly able to eliminate flaws and begin crafting the final version.

The Solution

The final magazine features a bold, striking front page. The color palette combines deep oranges with darker accents, creating a premium feel for the reader.
